DON'T BREATHE 2
Cert 18
98 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong bloody violence, gore

Five years ago, I wrote: "Don't Breathe is one of the most suspenseful movies to hit cinemas in a very long time."
Its sequel doesn't quite hit the heights of the original but it certainly had Mrs W and me on the edge of our seats.
Stephen Lang returns as the blind Navy Seal who is obsessed with defending his rickety old house from potential raiders.
He is also ultra-protective of his young daughter (Madelyn Grace), even teaching her how to escape a dangerous dog and handle a gun.
It turns out that he was right for them to be on their guard because there are some unsavoury folk in town, led by a creep (Brendan Sexton III) whose focus is the girl.
Don't Breathe 2 works because of its combination of intense action and a twisting, surprising storyline.
Lang handles his flawed character so expertly that we don't know whether we should be rooting for him or not.
Meanwhile, Grace belies her years with a performance that combines vulnerability with steely determination.
Mrs W did not initially fancy watching Don't Breathe 2 because she is averse to gratuitous gore and horror films which make her jump.
Rodo Sayagues' film had four significant scares and is awash with fake blood as its players meet a variety of untimely ends but she was gripped throughout.
It is certainly one of the better recent cinema offerings.

Reasons to watch: Surprisingly riveting
Reasons to avoid: Lots of gore

Laughs: None
Jumps: Five
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 8/10

Did you know?
In preparation for reprising the role of Norman Nordstrom, Stephen Lang worked with The Northeastern Association for the Blind in Albany, New York to accurately depict the mannerisms of someone afflicted with being blind.

The final word. Stephen Lang: "I had a wonderful experience the first time out. It was fun in a very serious kind of way. I learned a lot and it was challenging and unique. So the idea of going back was great. Not necessarily to repeat the experience, but to further develop and explore some new horizons." ComingSoon.net
