Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train (

BBFC advice: Contains strong violence, bloody images

At more than $500m, Demon Slayer Mugen Train took more money at the international box office than any other film in 2020
There wasn't much opposition, so the more impressive stat is that it is the highest-grossing anime ever and the most successful Japanese movie of all time.

Consequently, I simply had to watch it even though I had not seen any of the TV series on which it is based.
Unfortunately, I soon discovered that background information is a pre-requisite - this is certainly not a film which can stand alone.
There has been universal appreciation for Haruo Sotozaki's film from anime experts but, while I recognise the intense colours and the fierce battle between right and wrong, I was a little lost, particularly during its early stages.
The storyline focuses on Haruo Sotozaki Tanjiro (voiced by Zach Aguilar) and his friends, Nezuko, Zenitsu (Abby Trott) and Inosuke (Bryce Papenbrook) who board a train on which demons have been killing commuters
They join the ultra-confident Hashira, Kyōjurō Rengoku (Mark Whitten) who is ready to lead the fight against them.
However, they are put into a deep sleep by one of the enemy (Landon McDonald) who puts a stranglehold on the train and threatens to wipe out all on board.
There seems no hope but we all know the demonslayers are not just going to lay down and die.
Initially, for reasons stated, I found the plot tough to follow, the dialogue screechy and the animation wildly exaggerated.
After a while, I became tuned in to the pulsating activity and found myself urging the demon slayers forward.
Nevertheless, I can't say that I was enraptured enough to want to watch more.

Reasons to watch: Japan's biggest grossing movie ever
Reasons to avoid: Really difficult to follow for non-fans

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 6/10 (others will give many more)

Did you know?
Before it was a film or anime, Demon Slayer was a manga, created by Koyoharu Gotouge and released in 2016. Set during Taishō-era Japan (1912-1926), it follows a young boy named Tanjiro in his quest to join the secret society known as the Demon Slayer Corps in order to find a cure for his sister, who has been turned into a demon.

The final word. Natsuki Hanae: "Once we finished recording and when I finally saw the completed film, I felt like I had a lot of emotions running though me. I felt a little dizzy for a while after watching the movie, but immediately felt like I wanted to see it again." Anime Network
